Island Waterpark in October on the Atlantic City Boardwalk
Atlantic City, Stati Uniti

Island Waterpark at Showboat (801 Boardwalk) holds 120,000 square feet of indoor beach under a retractable glass roof, with the Atlantic visible through the beachfront glass wall. General admission at the door is $49, and $29 from 4 p.m. Through October, most Tuesday to Thursday dates are closed.

Inside the glass roof at 801 Boardwalk

Eleven coloured slide towers stack to the ceiling. Loungers and artificial palms sit below them on poured 'sand', and a standing surf wave runs on the floor. The beachfront glass wall keeps the ocean in view from the loungers.

The roof retracts, and the park trades year-round, so all 120,000 square feet sit under cover when the weather on the Boardwalk turns.

How long you need and where the queues build

A booked admission covers anything from an hour inside to a full eight. Queues build on the slides through the middle of the afternoon, and two arrival times miss that window: opening, and 4 p.m. The park shuts between 7 and 8 p.m., so a 4 p.m. arrival gives you the evening up to closing, and an arrival at opening gives you the towers before the afternoon fills them. Whichever you pick, the wave is the piece of the floor everybody walks to first.

Tickets, lockers and parking

Buy online before you travel. The online ticket includes free parking, which matters at a Boardwalk resort. The door price is $49 for general admission and $29 for twilight entry from 4 p.m. A Fall Pass is $119 and runs 5 September to 5 November, so an October visit sits inside it.

Lockers are $15 to $25 and towels cost extra. Book ahead and the admission confirms instantly and cancels without a fee.

Rules at the door

Under-16s need a companion aged 16 or older. Plan the party before you buy, because you cannot drop a teenager off here.

Groups of 10 to 20 take $10 off each ticket. Camp and school groups, celebration packages and party rooms book separately from general admission.

Is it worth it in October

It suits families and groups with a day to fill indoors, and the October calendar is mostly weekend-only, so you plan around it. Adults travelling without children get more out of the arcade in the same building.

Best time to go in October 2026

Fall operation is weighted to Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Most Tuesday to Thursday dates are closed, and only the dated calendar tells you which ones, so check it before you fix travel.

A midweek trip is still usable. The arcade in the same building trades long hours and the aquarium on the back bay opens seven days, both on dates the waterpark is dark.

The dry half of a Showboat day

Lucky Snake Arcade & Sports Bar at Showboat (801 Boardwalk) fills the resort's former casino floor, 85,000 square feet of patterned casino carpet with long rows of redemption cabinets and skee-ball lanes. Pinball sits under neon snake signage, and a glass-walled electric go-kart circuit runs at the rear.

Credits start at $20 for 200 and reach $100 for 1,250. The raceway is $25 for one race, $45 for two and $55 for three, plus a $4 annual membership. The circuit runs heats, so a group races together instead of waiting out each other's laps.

It stays open to 2 a.m. on Saturdays, hours after the waterpark closes. Bowling and a sports bar sit on the same floor, and party bookings go through the same desk.

Next door on the Boardwalk

Ocean Casino Resort (Boardwalk, immediately north of Showboat) is a 710-foot blue glass tower, the tallest building in Atlantic City. Rooms have floor-to-ceiling ocean windows, and the casino floor is glass-fronted, facing the beach. Showboat has no casino of its own, so many visitors pair the two.

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City, Atlantic City
Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City, Atlantic City

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City (Boardwalk, 10 minutes' walk south) keeps the old Taj Mahal's white Moorish domes and minarets, now hung with guitar signage, with glass cases of rock memorabilia in the lobby. Its theatres and bars are the most reliable source of live music on a wet October night. The gaming floor is 21 and over, $$$. A White House Subs counter sits inside, which covers you if the Arctic Avenue original is shut.

Steel Pier (Boardwalk, opposite Hard Rock) pushes out over the Atlantic on timber pilings under a 227-foot observation wheel with enclosed glass gondolas. Go-karts and a helipad sit at the seaward end. The wheel is $15 for adults and $12 for children, ride tickets extra, and one rotation takes 16 minutes. It runs year-round but stops below 40°F, and October hours lean to the weekend, so treat the pier as weather dependent. Gondolas seat small groups together.

Absecon Lighthouse and the back bay

Absecon Lighthouse, Atlantic City

Absecon Lighthouse (two streets behind the Boardwalk) is a 171-foot brick tower in black-and-yellow bands rising straight out of a residential block, with 228 iron stairs to an 1857 first-order Fresnel lens and a replica keeper's cottage at its foot. The climb is $7 to $10, and the view from the top explains the city's layout better than any map.

Autumn hours are Thursday to Monday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the last climb 30 minutes before closing. Climb in the afternoon and take a twilight waterpark ticket afterwards. Group tours book in advance, and the climb is self-paced, so large parties go up in waves.

Atlantic City Aquarium at Historic Gardner's Basin (Historic Gardner's Basin) is a low waterfront building on a working marina on the back bay, fishing boats tied up outside. An open-topped cow-nose ray touch tank sits on the floor and new hands-on tanks are upstairs. It reopened in March 2025 after a five-year closure and now runs seven days a week, 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. from 6 September, which makes it the strongest wet-weather backup near Showboat's end of town. Entry is $15 for adults, $10 for seniors, $8 for children aged 3 to 12, and free under 3. An all-day party room is $1,200 with admission for up to 75.

Back Bay Ale House (Gardner's Basin) is a weathered shingle pub with a bayside deck where boats moor a few metres from the tables, string lights overhead and sunset over the back bay. You eat on the water here. It opens daily, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., $$. The deck and dining room absorb large tables; call ahead for eight or more.

A free hour inside Boardwalk Hall

The Atlantic City Experience at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall (Boardwalk) is a free, self-guided exhibit inside the 1929 barrel-vaulted arena. Archive photographs of diving horses and Miss America parades hang beside old Boardwalk signage, with the hall's Midmer-Losh pipe organ beyond.

It opens weekdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the hall closes the exhibit areas around events. This is where the old Atlantic City Historical Museum went after Garden Pier closed in 2016, and it is the best free hour of context on why a waterpark sits on this Boardwalk.

Eating around the Orange Loop

Tennessee Avenue Beer Hall (South Tennessee Avenue) sets long communal wooden tables under exposed beams, with a chalkboard wall of more than 100 taps, murals and outdoor seating on the painted Orange Loop block. It was refurbished and reopened in 2025 and remains the anchor of the block. The kitchen is shared with the pizzeria next door and live music plays most nights. It opens Tuesday to Sunday and closes Mondays, $$. This is the most group-friendly room in the Orange Loop.

Hayday Coffee, Atlantic City

Hayday Coffee (South New York Avenue) is a small corner coffee bar with a pale retro interior, pour-over kit on the counter and pastries under glass. Locals come and go on foot. It opens seven days year-round, mornings only, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., $. The room takes two to four people, and larger parties order takeaway. Use it before the waterpark.

White House Sub Shop (Arctic Avenue) has traded from the same 1946 corner since it opened, white-tiled walls crammed with signed celebrity photographs and a long Formica counter where submarine rolls are split and dressed in front of you. It is the city's most-cited cheap eat, $. Hours at the Arctic Avenue original are Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. It is counter service with a handful of booths, and groups order whole subs to take to the beach.

Dock's Oyster House, Atlantic City
Dock's Oyster House, Atlantic City

Dock's Oyster House (Atlantic Avenue) is an Atlantic Avenue townhouse trading since 1897, with stained glass, dark wood, white tablecloths and a piano. A raw bar is banked with crushed ice and oyster shells. Fourth-generation family-run, it opens from 4 p.m. daily, $$$. Reservations are essential, private dining is available, and the rooms handle groups up to about 12.

Knife & Fork Inn (Atlantic and Pacific Avenue fork) is a Flemish-gabled brick-and-tile landmark from 1912 standing alone at the fork, with oak-panelled rooms and a Prohibition-era speakeasy past. It is the most architecturally distinctive building you will see away from the Boardwalk. Dinner runs from 4 p.m., it closes Sundays, and lunch is served on Fridays only, $$$. Reservations are recommended and multiple rooms take group dinners.

Kelsey's (Pacific Avenue at the Kentucky Avenue corner) puts a small live-band stage in the dining room, with bright murals nodding to the old Kentucky Avenue jazz clubs and plates of fried chicken and collards. It is the clearest link to the Northside and the historic Kentucky Avenue music scene. It closes Monday and Tuesday, with weekend service from 10 a.m., $$. Book ahead for six or more, especially for brunch and live-music nights.

Angelo's Fairmount Tavern (Ducktown) has been run by the Mancuso family since 1935, three generations in the old Italian quarter, with a dark wood bar, red-sauce dining rooms and framed family and boxing photographs floor to ceiling. Long-table family-style dining suits groups, and reservations are advised at weekends. Dinner only, from 5 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. at weekends, $$. It sits about a mile inland, so take a jitney or taxi from Showboat after dark.

Practical notes

The waterpark's October dates are weekend-weighted and published as a dated calendar, and the beer hall, Kelsey's, Knife & Fork Inn and the sub shop each keep a closed day, so confirm all of them before you fix travel. Book the waterpark online for the parking, reserve at Dock's, and arrange lighthouse group tours in advance.
