The Boardwalk changes character in late October. The wind comes straight off the water, the deckchair concessions have packed up, and by six the light over the ocean has gone the colour of wet slate. Halloween falls on a Saturday in 2026, so the casino floors will fill the way they always do. The more memorable hours are the ones spent off them: a lighthouse stairwell after dark, a mile of Boardwalk with a guide, a mini-golf course dressed in ghouls, a resident ballet company staging Dracula. This guide covers where each of those sits, what it costs and who it suits.
The Orange Loop carries the night
Tennessee Avenue Beer Hall (Orange Loop, a couple of minutes back from the Boardwalk) is the most sociable non-casino room in the city, and on 31 October it doubles as the admin desk of the evening. It is the official check-in venue for the PubCrawls.com Official Halloween Bar Crawl, Saturday 31 October 2026, 3pm to 10pm, 21 and over, with drinkers collecting wristbands here before fanning out to the neighbouring bars. The queue builds from 3pm and stays heavy until around 7pm. If you are not doing the crawl, come before three or after eight.
The Halloween listing can mislead, so it helps to know what the room is the rest of the time. This is a beer hall first, long communal tables, pints roughly $7-9, sandwiches and shareable plates $14-20, and a costume party second. Groups of six to ten can walk in on an ordinary night without ceremony; larger parties and private buyouts are arranged in advance. Crawl tickets are sold separately from anything you eat or drink, so buy them before you travel. Go early if you want a table and a proper meal; go late if you want the costumes, and accept that you will be standing.
Two streets over, Anchor Rock Club (247 S. New York Avenue, a few minutes from the Boardwalk) is the antidote to all of it: a scrappy independent music venue running metal nights, drag galas, DJ sets and film screenings, with most shows $10-25 and drinks $6-10. Its Halloween contribution in 2026 is a movie night, Suspiria on Monday 19 October, doors 7pm, 18 and over, which is a weeknight and therefore a very different proposition from a Saturday crawl. The attached Anchor Bar opens Friday and Saturday, 4pm to midnight, and the venue takes private hire. Unpretentious, easy with a group, and the right choice for anyone who would rather watch something than be judged in a costume contest.
One rooftop, and it needs booking
The VÜE Rooftop Bar at The Claridge Hotel (a block back from the Boardwalk) is the city's only true rooftop bar and has the best view in town, ocean on one side and the low sprawl of the island on the other. On ordinary nights there is no cover and cocktails run about $14-18; hours are Monday to Thursday 2pm to midnight, Friday and Saturday noon to 2am, and Sunday noon to midnight.
Halloween works differently. The bar runs 'Boos & Brews', themed drinks and seasonal bites, and the hotel sells a combined ticket pairing the rooftop with its Haunted Hotel costume party in the ballroom below. That combined ticket is the practical route for a larger party, because it gives everyone a room to retreat to when the roof gets cold or crowded. Reservations are strongly advised for the whole weekend, not just the 31st, and because this is a ticketed event rather than a walk-in bar, check the exact 2026 listing before you build a night around it. For couples, the ordinary Friday-noon-to-2am version of this bar is the better booking: same view, no wristband.
What the casino properties programme
The casino floors are not the whole story even inside the casinos. Resorts Casino Hotel (north Boardwalk) has the deepest Halloween programme of any single property in 2026, and most of it is not a club night. The Boo Bar 'Witches Edition' pop-up runs from late August right through the season, walk-in, no cover, cocktails around $15, and the theatre side of the building carries four genuinely different evenings: The Hocus Pocus Speakeasy on 3 and 17 October, Little Shop of Horrors on 10, 17 and 24 October, and, on Friday 30 October, both Candlelight: A Haunted Evening of Halloween Classics and Linda Shields, the Jersey Shore Medium. Tickets run roughly $30-60. Book a group in one transaction and you will be seated together; book separately and you will not.
Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City (Boardwalk, opposite Steel Pier) is the reliable big-room option. A Halloween pop-up takes over the Lobby Bar through 31 October with a multi-category costume contest, prizes including an overnight stay, a gift card and show tickets, and the Gimme Gimme Disco Halloween Edition lands on Halloween night at 9pm with seventies and eighties hits. There is no door policy on the lobby bar; groups simply turn up, and cocktails are $15-18 with no cover. Club night tickets are roughly $25-40. Ocean Casino Resort (north end of the Boardwalk) is the city's international-name DJ room. HQ2 books touring headliners for Halloween weekend, and on that weekend table minimums run high. Bottle service is realistically the only comfortable group route in, and it is worth the money if a big night is the point of the trip. Downstairs, Nola's is a walk-in lounge with no door policy and runs its own costume contest, which is the sensible option for anyone who wants the party without the queue. One caveat that matters for planning: HQ2 line-ups drop late. Check the events page a few weeks out rather than booking a whole trip blind around a name that has not been announced.
Hard Rock for a guaranteed room, then, Ocean for a guaranteed headliner if you can book late, Resorts if you want the weekend to contain something other than a dance floor.
Haunted, on foot
Atlantic City Ghosts by US Ghost Adventures (meets at the Rainforest Cafe, 2201 Boardwalk) is one mile and one hour on foot, taking in the haunted casino resorts and the corners of the city that do not get photographed. There is an extended version adding three or four further stops. It costs roughly $25-35 a head, private group bookings are available, and it is a fixed-price walk rather than a tip-based one. Bring ID; no printed ticket is needed. Halloween-week slots sell out, so book this one in advance rather than deciding on the night.
Absecon Lighthouse (the Inlet) is New Jersey's tallest and the third tallest in the country, and its late-October haunted tours are the most atmospheric hour in the region: the climb paired with documented paranormal recordings, followed by a longer paranormal investigation slot led by NJ Researchers of Paranormal Evidence. The daytime climb is around $10, the haunted tour about $25, the investigation about $50. The haunted tours are small-group and reservation-only and they sell out, so book as a party early. Watch the calendar, too. Winter hours (Thursday to Monday, 11am to 4pm) apply from September, and the last climb is half an hour before closing, so a daytime visit has to be an afternoon plan, not an evening one.
Dracula, danced
Atlantic City Ballet (staging Dracula at Caesars Atlantic City, mid-Boardwalk) is the city's resident professional company, and it puts on Dracula every year in the days before Halloween. This is a proper piece of theatre rather than a themed party, suitable for ages five and up, though the audience is invited to come in costume and prizes are awarded at the show, which is a rare and rather good combination. Tickets typically run $35-75, and theatre seating makes group bookings straightforward as long as they go through in one transaction. The 2026 date had not been posted at the time of writing; check acballet.org or Ticketmaster before you build an evening around it.
The family Halloween is stronger than the party one
Storybook Land (Egg Harbor Township, about twenty minutes inland) is the strongest young-family Halloween option in the region. Costumed children collect from a dozen treat stations across the park, and there is a hay maze alongside the usual rides. Admission is roughly $30 a head with trick-or-treating included, and tickets are sold online only, so book the whole party in one go. Trick-or-Treat weekends run across October, but the weekend pattern shifts from year to year, so confirm the exact 2026 dates on the site before committing a car full of children.
Closer in, North Beach Mini Golf & Bike Rentals (120 Euclid Avenue, the Inlet at Gardner's Basin) dresses its course in ghosts and ghouls for 'Haunted Golf' through 31 October. It is more silly than scary, which makes it the rare Halloween activity that works equally for a family and for a group of adults; a round runs about $12-15 a head, it is BYOB with free parking, and the venue has hosted tournaments, corporate happy hours and stag and hen parties through its events form. Hours are Sunday to Thursday 9am to 9pm, Friday and Saturday 9am to 10pm.
The Atlantic City Aquarium at Historic Gardner's Basin (Gardner's Basin, walkable from the mini golf) is recently renovated and the most useful hour in the city with children in tow, particularly on a wet October afternoon. From 8 September 2026 it reverts to 9.30am to 6pm with last admission at 5pm. Entry is around $12 for adults, less for children and seniors, with annual passes $40-60 and group rates available through the city. Golf and aquarium together make one easy morning without moving the car.
Lucky Snake Arcade at Showboat Resort (north Boardwalk, next door to Ocean) is the family answer to a casino-heavy city: non-gaming Showboat, and the largest arcade of its kind anywhere, with go-karts, roller skating, VR, glow golf and a full sports bar under one roof. You pay per game or top up a card, with karts and mini-golf priced separately. A dedicated events team takes party bookings ([email protected]) and the space absorbs any size of group. It is also where the region's late-October horror conventions and haunt pop-ups tend to land, so check what is on that specific weekend.
Steel Pier (Boardwalk, opposite Hard Rock) earns its place here for one ride: the Wheel, which runs March to December and is therefore open across Halloween weekend. Twenty dollars for an adult buys ten minutes in a temperature-controlled gondola above a black ocean, the cheapest genuinely memorable thing in the city and the best possible use of a cold night. Gondolas hold a small group together, and there is no door policy or booking. Pier ride hours narrow sharply in autumn, so treat the wheel rather than the whole pier as the draw, and check before travelling.
Free and outdoors, twenty minutes north
Historic Smithville Village sits twenty minutes north of the Boardwalk and operates in a completely different register: open-air, unticketed, free to wander, with food, shops and rides charged individually. The Underground's Monster Bash on 24 October 2026 runs vendors from 10am to 5pm (rain date 1 November) and brings horror-themed traders, live music, pumpkin carving and a $100 costume contest; Witches Day Out fills the village with costumed witches from noon. Because nothing needs a ticket, it is the easiest place in the region to take a large mixed group of adults and children. One warning: come dressed, or you will feel underdone by about half past eleven. The village pubs and restaurants take bookings, and on a festival Saturday you should use them.
Building the weekend
The geography does most of the planning for you. Resorts, Hard Rock, Ocean, Showboat and Steel Pier are strung along the north half of the Boardwalk within a fifteen-minute walk of one another, and the Orange Loop and the Claridge sit a block or two behind it. Gardner's Basin and Absecon Lighthouse are at the Inlet end and are better reached by car or jitney than on foot. Smithville, Storybook Land and the ballet each need their own slot in the day rather than being squeezed between drinks.
A workable adult Saturday: lighthouse haunted tour or the ghost walk in the afternoon, the Wheel at dusk, food at the beer hall before six, then either the Claridge rooftop or a casino room after nine. A workable family Saturday: mini golf and aquarium in the morning at the Inlet, the arcade when the weather turns, the Wheel at dusk, then Dracula or Smithville depending on the date. Stay on the north Boardwalk if the nights matter most and closer to the Inlet if the days do. Compare rates and locations through Atlantic City hotel search, and book before the first week of October, when Halloween-weekend rates firm up.
Practical notes
The Boardwalk is the spine and walking it is the point, but late October is genuinely cold and windy after dark, so plan for a coat that works over a costume. Jitney minibuses run the length of Pacific Avenue for a few dollars and are the sensible link to the Inlet and back at night; taxis and rideshare are easy outside the casino properties and slow to clear immediately after a club night ends. Trains terminate at the city's rail terminal a short ride from the Boardwalk. If you drive, the casino garages are the simplest option; North Beach Mini Golf has its own free parking.
On money: casino properties and the arcade are card-first, and the arcade runs on card top-ups. Carry some cash for Smithville's vendors and rides, and remember North Beach is BYOB, so buy before you arrive. Prices here are in US dollars.
Three things sell out and should be booked before you travel: the lighthouse haunted tours, the ghost walk's Halloween-week slots and Storybook Land's online-only tickets. Two things are announced late and should not be booked blind: HQ2's headliner and the ballet's 2026 Dracula date. Everything else (the Boo Bar, the Hard Rock Lobby Bar, Nola's, the Wheel, the arcade, Smithville) is walk-in.
A frugal but full Halloween Saturday runs about $60-80 a head: ghost walk, the Wheel, a round of haunted golf and a couple of pints in the Orange Loop. Add $30-60 for a theatre night at Resorts or $35-75 for the ballet. A big-room night at Ocean with a table is a different order of money entirely, and should be a decision rather than a drift.
